Love Ya Bunches…

The Existence of Love: Genesis 1:1

Each of us in our life has built something. Regardless of whether or not it still exists, anything that we have built started with an idea. That idea was the product of the power or energy of our mind. Every idea starts in the energy of the mind.

For example, if my idea is to build a dream house it would include those things that allowed relationships to grow. That house begins as an idea. That idea expresses the energy of our mind. We choose a certain style of house that expresses the desire of our mind.

Once we have an idea, we decide on a timeline. In other words, we want the project to be completed in say 9 months so we set deadlines for things to be accomplished within that time frame. The first thing on that timeline is to lay out dimensions and give it boundaries. In other words we create a blueprint that defines spaces.

Once we have laid out those spaces, we begin to assemble materials or matter that will give form to those spaces. Building can begin after we have established an orderly timeline, defined spaces or dimensions and assembled the needed materials.

You cannot have a roof where there are not walls and you cannot have walls where there is no foundation and you cannot have a solid foundation until you dug down deep enough into solid ground. So each must be done in an orderly fashion according to a time schedule.

Once the building is completed, it reveals what is in our mind. So in the same way, time, space and matter are created as an expression of God’s mind. The very first verse of our bible describes how the eternal mind of God began to reveal Himself through the creation of time, space and matter.

It says, In the beginning,(time) God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter). It is hard for us to conceive of God who is beyond these dimensions:

Before there was the limitation of time, there was the limitless mind of God.

Before there were the boundaries of space, there was the limitless presence of God.

Before there was the creation and assembling of atoms into matter, there was the limitless energy of God.

When we speak of eternity, we are describing something that is incomprehensible to us because it has no beginning and no end.  We are products of space, matter and time. (So often when we speak of eternity, we are assigning a limitless future to something that may not have had a limitless past. In essence only God is eternal.)

When God called space, matter and time into existence, He revealed what was in His mind. What was He revealing?…God is love. He created a dwelling place to share His love with His creatures. So He created man in His own image. That is, man was given mind with the capacity to choose to love. Love is meaningless unless it is a choice.

So, before anything came into existence, there was mind of God. That expression of mind, the Greeks called Logos, the idea. So, the idea of God is what we call the Word of God. Jesus is called the Word of God was made flesh and dwelt among us. Thus He is the express image of God. Jesus Christ shows us that the idea of God is Love.

The Expression of Love: Isaiah 9:6

The Greek language also has a word for grace, it is ‘charis’. It is a description of unexpected beauty. The kind of beauty that takes your breath away. It’s the kind of beauty that a groom sees when he first lays his eyes on his bride in her wedding attire. It takes his breath away to see her. She is to his eyes a vision of grace.

When I was a boy, our family took a trip out west to see the mountains. In particular we wanted to see Mount Rushmore. This stone carving was created in the South Dakota foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I remember my excitement the morning that we started our drive in anticipation of visiting mount Rushmore. It seemed to be an interminable slow drive with all of the ups and downs and tight curves leading to our destination.

It was a beautiful sunny morning as the car crested a hill and we got our first sight of it in the distance. At first, it was small and not easy to see. Then it disappeared as we descended down into another valley through the tall trees. Each time that we came up over a hill, we hoped to see it again. It seemed another long time of driving hoping to catch another glimpse of it. Then we crested a hill and suddenly there it was in huge relief framed by beautiful pine trees. I was so excited I didn’t have words to describe its beauty…that’s the experience that the greek language calls grace.

God often leads us on some windy roads with a lot of ups and downs before we get a glimpse of His grace, doesn’t He?

The prophet Isaiah described the unexpected beauty of Messiah that was to come over 800 years before the birth of Christ. In chapter 9:6 wrote that Messiah is to be called Wonderful, Counselor… These are two separate descriptions of Him. (It is not saying that He is a wonderful counselor, but that He is Wonderful and He is Counsellor)

That is, He is at once incomprehensible as the unknowable mind of God and at the same time as a skilled Counselor He is makes the mystery of God knowable. Christ Jesus is the only one who could be both too wonderful for words to express and yet at the same time be the very expression of God’s Mind.

He is at once a child that is born and yet He is the mighty God of eternity.

He is at once a Son that is given and yet He is the everlasting Father.

He is at once the King of kings and yet He is the Prince of Peace.

In other words, He is the perfect expression of the eternal mind of God given to us within the limitations of time, space and matter.

The Example of Love: John 3:16

For God so loved the world…

Did He love a world full of justice and goodness?

Did He love the world because the world first loved Him?

Did He love the world because Israel loved God more than they loved their nation?

Did He love the world because the world was eager to serve Him?

He loved the world that hated Him, hated His law, hated His people and delights in doing evil. He loves souls that are ruined by sin, that are doomed to spend eternity in hell without any ability to pay the penalty for sin.

That He gave…

The essence of love is a giving Spirit. Not a Spirit that gives to those who can repay. He gave the very best, He gave the very most to the very least. He gave Him not only to death but the death of the cross. A horrible agonizing death. A humiliating spectacle: The Psalmist wrote prophetically of His experience:

“But I [am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying], He trusted on the LORD [that] he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.”

Psalms 22:6-8 KJV

It wasn’t only man’s hatred that tore at His flesh but it was the hatred of demons that made war against His soul. “Many bulls have compassed me: strong [bulls] of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me [with] their mouths, [as] a ravening and a roaring lion.” Psalm 22:12-13 KJV This describes other-worldly beings attacking Him.

It is no wonder that He cried out to His Father, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me, why are you so far from the words of my roaring?! “O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.” Psalm 22:1b,2 KJV

He did not sin by cursing God and dying. He gave God praise, saying “you are Holy”. He knew that the Father heard Him and would not let His holy one see corruption. He would be resurrected. It is that same hope of resurrection that gives every believer the strength to endure the trials of this life and even persevere through the hour of death as painful as it may be. Is that your hope dear friend?

His only Begotten Son…

A lot of people were crucified by the Romans. Jesus is one of a kind. Of all of the good things that God possesses, His Son is the very best that God has.

He is the last Adam. There is none other like Him, there never will be another like Him; There never can be another like Him; There never needs to be another like Him. He has fulfilled all that the law required. He has resisted every temptation to sin and has not betrayed God as the First Adam did…like we have. “There is no other name given under heaven among men whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

That whosoever believes in Him…

His love for the world is love for individual souls. From my childhood, I was taught and I believed that Jesus died for the sins of the world. Yet, it was not until I was 23 yrs old that I understood and believed that He died for my sins. Whosoever means me and it means you.

Should not perish…

My sin is treason against my Creator. The penalty for treason against Eternal God is eternal death in the lake of fire reserved for the devil and his angels. The devil wants to take as many souls of men with him as he can. This death is not annihilation. The dead do not cease to exist. The Holy Spirit tells us through the prophet Daniel that some will be raised to everlasting life and some to everlasting contempt.

So just as heaven is experienced for ever for the believer, so too will those who refuse to believe experience that lake of fire forever. That experience of fire is never put out and where worm does not cease to live…decay is always present.

But have everlasting life.

Even though I am by nature doomed to receive eternal death, I can go free and receive eternal life when I turn back to God. The Spirit of God pleads with us…

“Say unto them, [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”

Ezekiel 33:11 KJV

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:”

John 1:12 KJV
