There are many ‘gospels’ in our world today. They proclaim good news for mankind by committing ourselves to a certain set of rules or laws. It may be ‘biblically-based’ by keeping religious traditions or the law of Moses. It may be more philosophical such as the ‘law of attraction’, ‘the secret’ or ‘social engineering’.
Whatever the label, often it has foundational assumptions that mankind is a work in progress toward a more perfect state. It has its roots in evolutionary thinking that we are somehow mutating ourselves to a higher being. Going along with this thinking is the notion that we can move to a ‘higher consciousness’.
This is very different from learning, growing and working to improve yourself to fulfill your God given potential.
Like all genetic mutations that actually result in a loss of information, such philosophical speculations usually result in the loss of truth.
If we can at least recognize and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is a good teacher, let Him teach us. What does He have to say about where to find truth?
Jesus Christ made it very plain that the writings of Moses were accurate and reliable sources of information concerning the creation of man.
In Matthew 19, Jesus quotes the book of Genesis and in this passage establishes the truth of those writings as the basis for His teachings on divorce. If He did not believe these writings to be true, he would not have quoted them.
In Genesis 2, we learn that man is a created being. We did not come into being by chance processes, but by a purposeful act of a wonderful Creator. God, as creator, revealed the purpose that he has for man when He placed man in the garden and gave him charge and dominion to care for all of the rest of God’s creation.
God gave man extraordinary powers of perception and most importantly, an ability to relate to God as an ‘unequal partner’ in His creation. So much so that when man sinned by disobedience to God, all that God created ‘very good’ was effected and began a process of decay. This is what science labels ‘entropy’ and it is the process that leads to degeneration and death.
So, what happened? In Genesis 3 we read, “The serpent was more crafty than any animal of the field which God had made, and said unto the woman, ‘Is it so that even God has said, You shall not eat of every fruit…?’ (verse 1)
Another created being called Lucifer was apparently jealous of the place that God gave man. Lucifer is an angel, a spirit being and he was created as chief among the angels (Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:13-19).
He is seen as the provocateur of kings and those who exercise dominion. He comes to deceive men and dissuade them from the truth. His first attack is to sow seeds of doubt about the truth of God’s Word.
Do you believe that the Bible is God’s Word to mankind? Many are deceived by the devil to think that the Bible only contains the Word of God. What about you? What do you believe?
Next, Lucifer (also called Satan and Devil) says, “You shall not certainly die; but God knows that in the day that you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
This pursuit of mankind to make themselves as gods is at the heart of the new age. It is the same old lie that was told to our first parents. We are still being told that we can be as gods. It panders to our pride and vanity and is most effective in hiding the truth from our ears.
This places us in a real and present danger that we will consider next.
